All instructional staff has a minimum of five years industry experience with a credit on a major title during that time. More importantly, we hire professionals who wish to give back to the industry by sharing their knowledge and expertise with talented artists and designers pursuing a career in the entertainment arts. Our instructors are experts in the latest tools and will teach you by showing the work they have done in their careers and modeling the very highest standards.
IVO VAN DER MAREL
Director of Game Technology Programs
Ivo has had an extensive career working on major games, VR, and mobile titles. His career has taken him to global positions in Europe, China, Vietnam, and Canada. Ivo is the founding CTO of UTG Academy, a learning academy focusing on STEM programs for Grades 1 – 12 students that has grown across Canada and now the world. As well has extensive industry experience, Ivo has launched, grown and managed game design departments for Canadian creative arts educators in Shanghai. Ivo has had substantial input into the creation of new VR and games curriculum. Regularly recognised with awards for his teaching, Ivo now brings his deep technical and design skills to Langara Centre of Entertainment Arts, where he is training the next generation of industry disruptors.
Director of VFX Programs
Melissa brings 18 years of VFX industry and teaching experience to Langara Centre for Entertainment Arts. With over 60 feature film and television credits to date, she recently expanded her expertise into the realm of PC and PS4 games. Melissa finds a passion for teaching and has taught and mentored at various studios in LA, San Francisco, Vancouver, and most recently in Mumbai. As a Compositing Supervisor, Melissa has contributed to films such as The Jungle Book, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Alice Through the Looking Glass. And now she is sharing her love for visual effects at Langara Centre for Entertainment Arts.
Director of Game Design Programs
Scott has over 10 years of industry experience where he’s worked professionally at some of the industry’s most recognized studios, like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard’s Radical Entertainment and Disney’s Propaganda Studios. All while working on AAA titles such as Star Wars Battlefront 2, Watch Dogs, Prototype 2 and SSX in various design and lead positions. Although his love for game design began as a hobby when he was younger, by making maps in Warcraft 2’s and Starcraft’s map editors. Scott also brings valuable education experience, as well a ruthless passion for game development and design.
Vice President Strategic Initiatives
Tyler is a VFX producer with over 10 years of leadership experience in Vancouver’s digital production industry and has worked with some of the world’s largest entertainment companies across a multitude of media platforms and genres. Tyler was a co-founder of a creative agency, which led to the world of production management. He has overseen projects for clients such as: Microsoft Xbox, Electronic Arts, Activision, Square Enix and produced VFX for the Emmy-nominated TV shows “The 100” and “The Man in the High Castle” through Zoic Studios. Tyler joined Image Engine to produce Seasons 6, 7 and 8 of HBO’s acclaimed series Game of Thrones.
Director of Animation Programs
Chad has two decades of VFX experience as an animator and animation supervisor. When he isn’t focused on teaching and honing his craft, he dedicates his time to photography, painting, illustration and writing. Across his many years in visual effects, Chad has worked with several industry-leading studios including Image Engine, MPC, and Rhythm & Hues. He has built a rich and diverse portfolio with films and tv projects such as Lost In Space, Power Rangers, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Independence Day: Resurgence, Batman vs. Superman, Goosebumps, Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters, The Hunger Games , Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Night at The Museum: Battle of The Smithsonian and The Golden Compass.
Peter has worked in the entertainment industry for over ten years, and in education for creative industries for eight years. He has worked on products for major entertainment companies such as Sony, Microsoft and Electronic Arts, and others. Peter’s credit list includes Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Crackdown, F1 and is the author of numerous books on technical development for the entertainment arts.
Director of Foundation Programs
Ed is a production artist, an illustrator, a fine artist, and most importantly an art communicator. He spent years working in both animation and gaming studios in San Francisco and Vancouver while also instructing for the Academy of Art University. His illustrations have been in multiple international publications notably Spectrum Fantastic Art. His work has also been nominated for a Chesley Award in the Unpublished Monochrome category. His fine art paintings have been recognized in international juried competitions such as the Annual International Representational Show by Federation of Canadian Artists and the International ARC Salon Competition. This diverse interest in art stems from a deep appreciation in the foundation of visual arts, about which he is always happy to chat with his students at Langara Centre for Entertainment Arts.
Vice President Business Development
Diwakar Gandhi is an innovative and strategically focused business development professional with over fifteen years of international educational leadership experience, contributing to partnerships and driving marketing & branding in the Film and Media education sector.
He received his undergraduate education at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, followed by a master’s degree in international Relations (Diplomacy) from University of Birmingham, UK.
Diwakar is extremely passionate about creating meaningful alliances that result in student success and satisfaction, while ensuring that partners from the creative industries benefit from the high caliber talent emerging from the Centre for Entertainment Arts.
